Scout navigation marketing

Just a brief foray here into navigation marketing.  SCOUT, to be specific.
You know, when you get in the car and turn on the old GPS and attempt to find a local business, as I did online in an earlier post here. What actually happened on that cold February day was, I turned to the GPS on my phone to find local nurseries.  I found 6 of them in my local area. Following the mapping directions, I went to 4 of them and found NONE.  Yes, NON-EXISTENT.  That's a lot of wasted gas ya' know (I'm saying that in my very bad Irish accent 'ya nooooo'.)  Anyway, getting back to my original thoughts;  If companies would post information (marketing) about their businesses with the mapping software companies, I wouldn't have had to waste all that time and gas. And what a great, free promotional spot for their company!

For instance, SCOUT  is a Telenav company. This is one of the mapping software products that I have on my Samsung Galaxy S4.  Here are the first pages  that come up when I choose a particular local grocer that I love:

Fresh Market Aiken Scout Screen
Notice with this screenshot there is a section for the address, phone number, how far away the store is located from me, and other basic information, and down below, we find "rating" and another for "map". But how would someone who has never experienced Fresh Market know what a wonderful store it is? Or how long it's been in business?  Or what types of products they carry? Or what their hours are?

Fresh Market August Scout Screen
Now, here is a screenshot for another Fresh Market not too much further away.  There's a section for "overview" here, and when I scroll down below (out of the screenshot) there are also sections for "hours", "rating", and "map". This is where The Fresh Market is giving information about their producst and services. They could even tell about their set specials here (Thursday little big meals, Fish Friday, you get the idea). This is FREE.
How do you update your listing, you ask?  Interestingly enough, Telenav populates these sections from yellowpages.com on a quarterly basis.  Either as a customer or a business owner, you can add information to this and have it updated.  It's really that simple.  What are you waiting for?  When you get done updating  your business, post it in the comments below and let me know who you are.

Have a fabulous week!

A bit of fun after tax day....

To celebrate my doneness with US income tax filing for the year 2013, I am including some funnies I found online to which some of you may be able to relate. I know I did.  Click on the links below the images to go to the original sites for more humor, or to find out more from the authors.  Please note, though, that I posted the "clean" ones.  Others on their sites may be suited only for adults, or may be offensive to some.  I say GO FOR  IT!

Build it and they will come? I think not.

It's a very rainy Monday here in Aiken and it's taking everything I have to keep on task.  I think this is the ultimate challenge of content marketing for my business.  Build it and they will come? I think not. I think it will take continuous and conscientious management and attention to detail. Not only in the products I sell, and managing my website (which is a lot of work in and of itself), but with the marketing of it. Sometimes it's hard to get up on Monday morning, knowing that I need to put out a blog post. Yeah, I've been thinking it up in my brain over the weekend, and maybe even wrote down a few notes on what I want to say, but that's not the same as actually sitting down and writing it and posting it out. I have made a commitment to myself to have it done and posted on Mondays, and I have to stick to it. Build it and they will come.  No. It takes self control, and persistence (of which I have much). And motivation.
Speaking of motivation, I have come across a website called TED TALKS. Unbelievably awesome, this site is unique in that it consists of videos of influential and thoughtful speakers. Their "talks" last 18 minutes or less.  My guess is that after 18 minutes, it becomes a speech, and it would become boring. These talks are not boring. Try it. You have over 1700 to choose from.

Have a great week!

The beginning of SEO

SEO Optimization

Search engines are programmed to rank websites according to their popularity or relevancy within  given search parameters.  If I want my website or blog to be available to readers and/or buyers within that framework, I have to share my website contents with search engines so they can find and recommend my site to others.  Well, I don't really have to SHARE it with them.  They'll find me. Then, when someone does a search for one of my products (or for me), they can find me by doing a basic search by Google, Bing, Yahoo, or others. This can be accomplished with a process called Search Engine Optimization (SEO).  The search engines send out a crawler (Internet bot, if you will) to pick up bits of information from each website it can find.  The key, for me, as a seller, is that I need to make it super easy for these crawlers to get the right information; see that my site isn't Spam or just advertising.  It's great, and relevant, and should be put it out there high in the search engines so my "peeps" can find it.
What's important in getting my website or blog at the top of search engines, is how my website communicates and interacts with other websites and people. This includes linking to other relevant websites, social networking, reciprocal blogging or mentions, and real referrals from other sites.  It's also important to be able to communicate with other types of devices, such as tablets and mobile phones.  How easy is it to move around on my website?  Are the images so large that it takes too long to load the page?  If I'm concerned about loading speed (and we all should be), I can go to the Page Speed Analyzer here  to do an analysis of my website's speed.  This site will even tell me how I can correct the issues of slow page loads.
Got too much advertising on your page?  That will send you back down on the list.
And the number one thing to do to help  your content to get to the top of the list is to write and display GREAT CONTENT so people will go to it, read it, and tell their friends about it.  Yep, fantastic writing, images that awe, videos that go viral, and products that impress.
If you would like some more goodies on SEO, I recommend you first read the Google Webmaster Guidelines here..  Then, maybe a search on SEO is in order.

Have a great week!

You don't need to be an Internet Wizard to get more customers to your door.

Ok, so I know there is a true NEED to be online marketing, and I know that a website is important, and what possible networking sites I have available, so.....where do go from there?  I have not found anything *** ANYTHING *** yet, that cannot be explained by searching online.  I'm serious.  Try it. Open up a new screen and do a Google search for "how to start a website".  This is what I found:

About 5,150,000,000 results (0.70 seconds)

Impressive, huh?  Depending on your location, and your search history, at the beginning of your search, you will see a few paid ads and then the actual search list is below that.  This is not going to be a quick process if you are doing it yourself (believe me on this). If you aren't ready for the education yourself, it might be best to hire someone to set up your web site.  No judgement here.  It's not for the faint of heart.  Or for those who don't have the time to do it themselves.  I just happen to have the type of brain that I HAVE to do it myself, even if I am not an Internet wizard.  Here are some other items to search for that I found was helpful:

content marketing
blogging
internet marketing
pinterest
google +
twitter
facebook
youtube
instagram
linkedin
storeboard

Whoa! Ok, that's enough for right now.  I can see this will be a work in process. The fact is....the information is out there.  Even in laymen's terms.  Let the learning begin!

Where do you want to Network?

There are several social media venues available for marketers, in addition to your business website.  I am listing some of the most popular I found below, but there are many more, and I am sure even more will be introduced in the near future. Don't be concerned about the long, boring list; I am only including a very short description (and my even shorter take on each) so as not to be overwhelmed all at once and will take them one at a time in the future. Some of these venues I have already been a participator in another context, so the concept of marketing there will be new. I do not claim to be an expert in any of these, and hey, that really is the purpose of this blog.  I want to get very good at it.

Facebook is the current "ultimate" social site. Originally set up for college students, there is now a massive global audience of very diverse backgrounds.  Most of the pages are made up of individual pages, consisting of text, videos, and images.  Businesses and organizations or groups may set up their own pages, and even advertise.  Connections are made by "friending" other users and  "liking" businesses or organizations. And users may hide information or communication from others at will.

Twitter is used when you have up-to-the-minute images or information that you want to quickly stream out the individuals and business to which you are connected. These "tweets" use an interesting (if not confusing) method of hash tags and other symbols and are limited to 140 characters.

Google+ uses small groups of people who share photos and communicate.  These are called "circles".  There is also a group chat feature called "hangouts".  One of the benefits, at least right now, of using Google+ is that they are fairly new.  Clients can be directed to your circle there and not worry about them getting lost in a billion of other circles. And yeah, it's GOOGLE.

YouTube is extremely popular. When a customer cannot be in your shop (or home studio in my case), you can bring it to them.  They may also stay on your site longer.  Adding a video to your site increases its search engine optimization (SEO).

Pinterest is mostly viewed by women.  Some may think this is limiting for advertisers, but I'm not so sure.  First of all, it is all visual.  Images.  Products.  People create boards and add "pins".  These are items they like.  Even though there are a few who have used Pinterest for negative or political grandstanding, it is a mostly positive and helpful website.  Maybe it's just me, but I tend to be drawn to these types of venues.  Maybe my clients do too.

Instagram is used to promote products among your followers through smartphone photos.  Don't sell a product?  You can always take photos of where you work, what you do, or events  you attend.

Foursquare is a platform whereby you have a business listing and can get recommendations from other businesses and individuals, thereby gaining customer loyalty. They can also "follow" their recommended businesses. It appears that there is a much closer relationship with customers and clients on this mobile platform.

LinkedIn not only is a venue for businesses, but also their employees, and groups.  As a client, you have access to the business AND their employees behind them.  That's brand building!  This is a very professional site, unlike any other. Many employers worldwide even go to LinkedIn to do research on prospective new hires.

Blogs have been around a long time.  If you are reading this, you already know the value they are, and how they work.  Blogs can be big money makers too with advertising.

Storeboard is used by small businesses, charities, and non-profits.  They can add videos, blog posts, and status updates.  And you'll find forums, coupons, deals, and  a business directory to bring it all together.

Smartphones have become so widespread and necessary that if you don't have an app, or your marketing is not available by smartphone, then give it up.  You are already a caveman in terms of communicating with your customers.  Five years ago, I couldn't take a vacation without my computer, but now I won't take one with it. I don't take it on business calls either.  My phone has all the relevant information I need immediately without lugging a laptop.

One thing I would like to stress here is that, other than the time involved, or the employment of a marketing coach or assistant, each of these venues can be useful for FREE.  Yeah, there may be content that you can pay for (pro users, advertising, or advanced menu items), but they're not necessary.

Well, there you have it.  That's what I have so far.  Stay tuned.....

Have a fabulous week!

Start with a website

By nature, I am a planner, but because going "online" with my business was such a big endeavor and there were too many choices and methods, I chose just to dive right in.  I will probably tweak it later but for right now, I'm pretty happy.

I am familiar with cruising the Internet, so searching for information on websites was not hard.  But it is arduous. And time-consuming.  If you want a website of your own (and you do), you will have to purchase a web DOMAIN (approximately $25-$40 a year, depending on where you register and how many years you commit to).  That's your identifying website name.  That is something to think long and hard about.  If you own "Joe's Donuts", you probably won't find a web domain available for the name www.joesdonuts.com.  You may find instead "www.bestdonutsintown.com" or "dunkit.com".  Think about what promotions and fabulous logos you already have or what motto you may want to express. To find out if the domain name is available for your website, there are many sites online where you can search. One I found was at www.register.com, but there are more. I searched for "register domain" in Google to find that one.

There ARE web hosts out there that will host your website free, using their software to maintain your site yourself. My website is hosted at Weebly.com and I use their free platform.  I set up an account there and registered my domain name with them (karenstonestudio.com). Then I can set up my website right on there, without knowing any HTML code.  My experience with their site and customer service has been excellent. To clarify, I am not getting paid for reviewing my experiences with them here. You can search for "websites" on Google and get even more companies where you can set up a web site. If you want to go with Weebly, you can click on their logo in the right column above.  If you know of any other easy or free sites out there, let's hear it in the comments section below.

When you have your website up and running (which could be just a matter of an hour or so), fill it with some great stuff.  Add some products.  Set up a blog.  Takes lots of photos and post them.
Make it yours!

Have a great week!

ps. If you click on the "Weebly.com" link above, and choose to open an account with Weebly, I could possibly receive a tiny little compensation just for putting the link on this blog. My mention and review of Weebly.com is in no way altered by any compensation (however teeny tiny) I may receive from them.  It is strictly an unbiased review.  And I also have no connection to Joe's Donuts, although I would be open to the possibility if there is a "Joe's Donuts" anywhere in the world.  I do like donuts....just sayin'.....

The Competition is Online

If there is no other reason to have a website and begin marketing your goods and services online, the one that should drive you to that keyboard is the fact that your competition IS online.  Even if you are not an Internet guru, if your customers are online (computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone), you need to have a significant presence there.
For instance, picture yourself as the owner of a garden center in Augusta, GA.  Your business is named "Joe's Garden Center".  If your customer does a Google search for "Joe's garden center augusta, ga", they will encounter some interesting results, the first three of which are:

  1. Good Earth Produce & Garden Center - AugustaGA - Food ...

    https://www.facebook.com/pages/...Garden-Center/140571559344045

Good Earth Produce & Garden CenterAugustaGA. 3149 likes · 7 talking about this · 166 were here. Open from March 10 - December 24th! We proudly carry ...

  2. Garden Centers in AugustaGeorgia with Reviews & Ratings - YP.com

    www.yellowpages.com › Augusta, GA

    Yellowpages.com
    Results 1 - 30 of 39 - 39 listings of Garden Centers in Augusta on YP.com.
    1
    Broome's Farm & Home Center.
    (706) 793-9475.
    2
Good Earth Produce And Garden Center.
    (706) 550-0227.

  3. nurseries plants trees in Augusta GA - Yellowpages.com

    www.yellowpages.com › Augusta, GA

    Yellowpages.com
    Results 1 - 30 of 31 - 31 listings of Nurseries-Plants & Trees in Augusta on ...
    1
    Green Thumb West Garden Center
    110 Davis Rd ...
    (706) 863-0212.
    2
    Rainbow Nursery Landscaping.
    1915 Tobacco Rd ...
    (706) 798-6552

Now, if I am a customer and I'm searching online for your garden center so I can get your hours of operation, I won't be able to find you.  I can find Broome's, Good Earth, and Green Thumb West.  I'll easily be able to find theirs.  For this reason alone, Internet marketing is important.  And content marketing (talking about your business online) will help you get your message across.  On top of your competitors.  Go ahead and do a search of your business.

Have a great week!

We are a world of neighbors

Selling Art online is difficult, for obvious reasons.  I have a website in which I sell artisan jewelry, so I have had some experience in that attempt.  The past two years that I have been developing my website has been a very steep learning experience for me.  I've also figured out that I think with both sides of my brain.  You know, that right side that supposedly is responsible for my artistic leanings and, unfortunately emotions.  I have also had to engage that left side these past two years; the numbers and critical thinking side.
While delving into the left side of my brain, I have come across a field in which I have had a lot of FUN, if not wholesale success.  Content Marketing.  People who know me would respond with "What?"  See, I am painfully shy.  So painfully shy, in fact, that my attempt to counteract my shyness is to have an arsenal of research, experience, information, or expertise on the subject so that my shyness would be overlooked. (On a side note, that approach also leads to being well read on miscellaneous useless information on other subjects, to the annoyance of friends and family.)
To that end, I am researching and learning what it takes to be very good at Content Marketing;  The best, in fact, for what I call "local to global" promotion" .  I am slowly, but methodically moving in the right direction.  One of the very first things I have come to realize is that we are a world of neighbors. When you look out your window, you can obviously see your neighbor right next door, but in this wonderful internet world of ours, when you look into the window of your computer or your smartphone, you are also communicating with your global neighbors. In my case, I can more easily contact a supplier on Aliexpress than I can find my next door neighbor at home.  And it takes no more effort for me to sell and ship a piece of work from me in Aiken, SC to someone in The Northwest Territories as it takes to sell it to my cousin in Dumphries, VA (Okay, it was a little harder to sell to my cousin, but I digress....).
I envision this blog to be a guide for those who prefer to handle their own Content Marketing.  I hope it will prove to be somewhat entertaining while keeping current and informative.  It will also be a jumping off point where clients can contact me, express opinions, and even start the process of having their Content Marketing done in a thoughtful and involved way.
Come visit with me as I strategize my way  global.
